Re: Veritas low angle smoother
Hi Jacob Have you tried a squiggle of candle wax on the sole of the planes when using them? This becomes increasingly helpful as the cutting angle increases, making what was once a resistant plane literally float on the wooden surface. A Bosch ROS?! You heathen! Actually I have an old Festo (before ...

I am pleased to hear that you are happy at last, Jake. I must say that the LAS is one of my favourite planes. I enjoy its lightness and the feedback it offers. I did modify the tote, however ... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a262/Derek50/Planes/LV%20planes/LVLAS2.jpg A few years ago I wrote this...

Still somewhat grudging I'm afraid. Well it's the price innit! Also it's no good as a jack (general purpose) I'd pick up a 5 1/2 for preference every time. It's a long smoother. I think I should have bought the short one - it looks more sensible. In fact I think I will, and put the 'jack' on ebay (...

Re: Sideboard-Entertainment Centre WIP: Building the frame
You could have laminated the curved rails. Structure aside they look very interesting. Thanks Brian. I did consider laminating the rails. I have built demilune tables in the past this way. However the problem with this is that the doors are low and one would see the laminations when opening them. S...

Hi Jacob Thanks for the reply. All of what you write may be correct. In fact I have been concerned all the way through the project so far that this may be the case. Re: thought for the day - more sharpening b******x
Hi Jacob Achieving a camber on a BU blade is straight forward ... IF ... you start with a 25 degree primary bevel, and then add the camber via a higher micro secondary bevel. I don't know if you can do this with your method? The joke is that a few years ago Larry Williams (in the thread over there) ...

Hi Jacob
A question for you, especially since you sharpen only the bevel and not the back of the blade: what is your opinion on the longevity of the blade edge in your LA Jack?

Re: Convert your #5 to a scrub plane and back in seconds
Hi Jacob Keep in mind that that plane is some years old, and has been used on Aussie hardwoods, all very hard and having a high level of silica (sand). My Stanleys planes look similar. I take care of my planes, but do not baby them - they are tools to be used, and used they look. Regards from Perth ...

Re: Convert your #5 to a scrub plane and back in seconds
Gawd Jacob, you really want to do it the hard way! Why not just invest in a couple of blades for the LA Jack? Keep one at 25 degrees for end grain and cross grain, another at 50 degrees for face grain, especially interlocked types, and then you could camber another with a 5 1/2 - 8" cambe...

Re: expensive and long lasting or cheap and easily replaced?
It's a bit of a mystery though innit sometimes this planing? I've been doing some soft but wild grained cedar of lebanon. Record 5 or 5 1/2 bad tear out. Veritas LA jack still tearing out but not so bad. QS 4 better by far. Gave up and bunged it through the thicknesser (blades not too sharp, it's o...

Re: expensive and long lasting or cheap and easily replaced?
Hi Jacob So far you are completely missing the LAJ's potential. Really. Seriously now, try honing the edge at about 50 degrees, then use the plane on the absolutely gnarliest piece of wood you can find. Then try the wood again with one of your Stanleys for comparison. Let us know what you experience...

Re: expensive and long lasting or cheap and easily replaced?
LV LA Jack Is the new style ductile steel softer than the old plane material? I just hit nail and have a scratch across the sole. Wouldn't have touched a Record. Not that I'm bothered abt a scratch except the resale price has plummeted. Might as well throw away the box now! Sharpening - easiest way...

Re: expensive and long lasting or cheap and easily replaced?
...... The LN is a fine plane (I enjoy using the Stanley) but it is far less sophisticated than the Veritas..... If sophistication is the lateral adjuster (which isn't much good) and the grub screws (seem pointless to me - why not make the blade slightly wider but tapered back? ) ... One does not h...

Re: expensive and long lasting or cheap and easily replaced?
I might do next time! Veritas low angle jack lateral adjuster problem; the leverage is so little that it's easier to shift the blade itself with thumb and forefinger, and it's more precise. Either way you have to loosen the cap adjuster first. Bailey sorted all these details 150 years ago! Can make...

Re: expensive and long lasting or cheap and easily replaced?
Just spotted the LN is £36 cheaper than the Veritas. So that's £36 for a lateral adjuster which doesn't work! Bugger. Though you can get 01 blades for the veritas, which will make sharpening easier. I've ordered my Veritas skew block with O1 (having sold my LN first as an demonstration of financial...

The Shaker-style table is complete, just in time for Mother’s Day. (This was built over three weekend days, off-and-on in the workshop) Lynndy wanted a table for her sewing machine. Re: expensive and long lasting or cheap and easily replaced?
The small LA Smoother is a delightful plane. It has a thinner blade - 1/8" thick - and 2" wide. It will leave your best smoother for dust! Does sound a better bet. Aren't thin blades crap though? That's what everybody says though I don't think so myself. My opinion is that 1/8" is re...

Re: expensive and long lasting or cheap and easily replaced?
Hi Jacob While the LA Jack may certainly be used like a traditional jack plane, that is it can take thick shavings with a deeply cambered blade, it is really not a jack. It is, instead, a panel plane - a long smoother. What you want to do is stop fiddling with the plane - you will go blind if you ke...
