Pergola project: how to butt joint fence posts?

Postby jc2684 » Mon Sep 18, 2017 3:49 pm

Hi everyone,

I am planning to make a very simple pergola to fit in the side return of our house. I want the final structure to look very much like this: http://rachelhartleydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/SIder_return3-1024x768.jpg

Does anyone have any idea how I could butt-join the vertical and horizontal posts like this? I had thought some Kreg pocket-hole screws would do the job, but I'm not sure the screws would be meaty enough (?). What about a simple right-angle steel bracket?

I have seen versions where the top post is put to one side of the vertical, and connected with nuts & bolts, but this wouldn't look as aesthetically pleasing to me and also it would leave the top end grain of the vertical exposed.

I've made some smaller scale interior furniture but I'm new to exterior construction.

Any ideas much appreciated!

Best wishes,

Jon

A half lap joint and a couple of screws should suffice.

300mm x 8 screws and a simple butt joint
I use heco topix screws for this type of work

Try Toolstation or Screwfix for 150/200mm timberlok screws, they are used for decking work and fixing sleepers together etc..

Thanks for your suggestions guys.

Going into end grain, wouldn't a few decent nails be better than screws? (I actually have 200mm timberlok screws already, I used them for sleepers but didn't go into end grain.)

But I actually like promhandicam's suggestion of half-lap joints. I have a router, so they shouldn't be too much trouble, and might look a bit more "finished" than butt joints.

Thanks again,

Jon
