burn it? bury it? sell it?

when the tip acts like this you can almost see why people take drastic action and fly tip.

Find a horse! Actually a serious suggestion, mine all goes to the local vet who uses it below a layer of straw to soak up horse or goat pee!

Stick it on Freecycle, that's how I found my disposal method! Quick email and he collects it when he's passing!

They might not be so impressed if there's a lot of MDF dust in there though.........

Same here, but you can apply for a permit which i think is free for me but you only get 3 visits per permit so the bigger the van more rubbish you can dump!!

on a serious note though jase, why can't you just bag it up in black bin bags and say its something else like wood offcuts or shredded paper. although i think they maybe wise to you now!!

If it is trade waste, the vast majority of council run dumps will not take it without charging a fee. When you fill out the form at the tip for a van/trailer permit it asks where the waste is coming from, so unless you lie and pretend that you are producing multiple bags of shavings from some domestic work, they will almost certainly reject your application. And if you do lie, and get caught out, there are some pretty hefty fines.

I just dig mine into the garden and composters. Its amazing how much you can fit in a normal composter when its wetted down a bit

You learn something new everyday.

i dig my mine into the garden too (when i say dig i mean dump it behind the shed - as the premises i work from are being demolished next year)

I give my chippings to an allotment holder who uses them to make paths on his plot. He swears by their use for preventing weed growth.
Local authorities all seem to have the same idea - make it difficult and they won't bring rubbish to the dump! It's true, some of the country lanes are now equiped with fridges, settees, and loads of plastic bags and piles of rubbish. It must be a nightmare for farmers and land owners.
The local authority still has to pay the landfill tax after they have paid to collect the fly tipped rubbish.

Yes freecycle and horse or other pet owners will snap it up.
Though also not keen on fag ends, bottle tops, fish n chip papers, p*ss, rat droppings, half eaten sandwiches etc.

There's no such thing as waste with wood. Compost is OK provided you have enough nitrogenous material to balance it out, e.g. loads of grass clippings which turn into a black, slimy mess on their make a good mix with some wood shavings. Too much carbon though and the levels of nitrogen become depleted apart from which the whole process slows almost to a stop. Unless you have acres of lawn and/or don't plane up much timber, it's hard not to spoil a perfectly good compost heap if you treat it to all your shavings. I give all mine to an old chap who rears ducks and they like it for bedding (though they prefer some colours to others, fussy little bleeders) and he still has to buy some more, hence why he's always cursing me to get my finger out and do some more work. I think freecycle is a good suggestion. There's bound to be someone who can use some free shavings or firewood.

Horsey people wont take it as its too dusty i'm told . The allotment gets rid of alot of the spindle and planer chippings / shavings but what about the 10 bags of mdf , fags butts and fish and chip wrappers ? I dont want to be pissing about hiding it in bin bags i just want to know where to get rid of it .

No they fall out of my mouth while im eating fish and chips and then get sucked up into the extractor
The pure stuff in the extractor i have no problem getting rid off . Its the sweepings off the floor that i have the problem with . I have seperate extractors for MDF and solid timber so the shavings are pure wood but the animal lot still wont take it

Which is exactly why you shouldn't put it on your borders or into your compost heap! It is no good for plants!

You must have some picky buggers round your way, it's good enough for the vets horses!

Ring up a local skip hire place? I used to get rid of mine that way before I found a free way, good opportunity for a workshop spring clean too! As it's really light you may be able to get a reduced skip price, though probably only if you know them or are right next door.

At my last workshop I had an arrangement with the council bin men to take all my waste for a small consideration - £20 a month did the trick. Unfortunately the guys who collect from my neighbours now are less amenable to corruption. It might be worth a try, though!

I just assumed that everyone had a little trailer which they towed to the tip behind their car - not a van. So long as it's not brought in a van they just think that it's domestic waste.

I'd love to see Bob towing a trailer to the tip in his Lotus!

Biffa for me.
How can it pay to drive to a tip? there is always a queue at our tip.
Plus there is the risk of bumping into Mr G, rummaging for stock.

They don't allow it any more. Not like the good old days - the whole family down there, trying on clothes, looking for firewood, spare parts for the Scalextrics or the bikes, bits of lego etc. Elf n safety gorn mad innit!
Skip raiding is still a goer though.

The local horse lot won't take my saw dust, too dusty, and you can only put a relatively small amount in the garden or in the compost or it takes away all the nitrogen, so I burn mine in a woodburner.

I rent one of those 1100 litre wheely bins from the local waste disposal people for 14p a day. When its full I give them a call and they come and empty it for £7.61. They take the stuff away and compost it in their huge compost heaps. All my workshop organic waste (including MDF dust, cardboard and offcuts) goes in the bin, and I even put garden waste in there when there's been some especially heavy pruning going on. Simples.

I had a bit of a tidy up this morning and managed three trips to the tip in an hour; fortunately it's only half a mile away and there are no queues on weekdays.

Normally it's only once a week or so - hardly ever though in winter, because then we burn all our waste on the woodburner.

We burn some in a stove, but not nearly as much as we produce - up to 1000 litres in a day's sawing/planing. Horsey friends take some, chicken neighbours some, some gets used for weed control, and if the worst comes to the worst a trip to the local enlightend tip, where they mix it with chopped-up garden waste and horse shit, compost it, and leave it in a big pile for people to help themselves. All free.

A friend who is a groundsman for several local cricket clubs has taken several sacks of planer shavings (oak) as he says these are ideal - sawdust on its own is too fine.

A tax i think

All prices are an annual charge for a weekly collection and are subject to 17.5% VAT. Trade refuse charges may change subject to adoption of Trade Waste Expansion Plan.

That just doesn't seem right, looking on the web most companies seem to make that a one off charge and it doesn't change unless you change the type of waste.

Maybe they got it wrong . I told them my work changes from week to week so i cant commit to having a pick up every week and didnt know how much waste i will have as that also changes . They did say its not what they normally do but have come up with this for me .
