What wood is this?
What wood is this?
I came to own this wood offcut, it smells herbal when cutting in to it, but the wood still contains a bit of moisture.
I believe the wood came from around a canal area. I think it might be hardwood as I cannot indent it easily and it is a beast to cut through.

No guesses?
I tried to do the gov website to ID, but it starts at what type of leaf does it have, and they have all fallen off!
The conclusion I was trying to reach was seeing what the wood would be okay for use in.

Re: What wood is this?
Looks like softwood, split it down the middle & see what it looks like though I'm guessing Steve may well be right
Re: What wood is this?
Well that would be a pity, although summer is coming along and it might make a fine BBQ!
Thanks
Thanks

Re: What wood is this?
It looks like Alder to me. Lots of them grow by the waterways. Good for next to nothing but firewood after being split and dried for a year or two.
Re: What wood is this?
Thanks, yeah I haven't done anything with it. I'll probably take my log splitter to it closer to the Spring.
Re: What wood is this?
looks like elm to me, especially if it's nice and dense, hard to cut.
Looks exactly like my dead elms in my garden hedge.

Re: What wood is this?
Alder? good for nothing? What about the soles on medieval patterns?, eating bowls made on a pole lathe? All woods have a use and not just firewood. I'm sorry but my knowledge of trees without leaves is very limited but as has been said before, The log looks like softwood to me. Leaves would be good. Any old ones in the area?Mike Jordan wrote:It looks like Alder to me. Lots of them grow by the waterways. Good for next to nothing but firewood after being split and dried for a year or two.

Re: What wood is this?
I'm knocking on a bit but medieval? The dust from Alder is rated as an irritant so I don't fancy food bowls made of it, but it's fair comment to say that most timbers have uses other than as firewood. It's a matter of whether the preparation and carefull drying time is worth the effort.

have a look at my profile, now I have filled it out. It will explain my reply

Alder was my first guess as well to be honest.
