Advice on Wood / Structure for Garden Gate

Postby MarkB » Mon Jun 26, 2017 9:12 pm

Hi,

I need to replace my side garden gate (which is falling to bits!) and would like to make one myself.

Can you offer me advice on the type of wood I should use?

Also, I was just going to copy the existing gate structurally in terms of the battens / bracing at the back. Any reasons why I wouldn't want to do this and instead go for a different design?

Pics of my existing gate below:

Many Thanks, Mark

Hi. Do you have access to a planer thicknesser or will you have to buy prepared timber?

Hi,

I don't have a access to a planer thicknesser so will have to go with prepared timber.

The existing vertical slats are 1cm thick by 9cm wide.

I'll most likely be limited on thickness by what is in stock but should have some control over cutting the slats to the correct width.

Thanks, Mark
