Cabinet design and cutting service idea
Hello all
I am thinking about running a venture - I know I know you’ve heard it all before - but I tend to be relatively successful with these!
The new venture is cutting and edging bespoke cupboards for tradesman in the domestic market! A part of me says stay well clear, another part of me says it’s winner
I know the pitfalls of this, but what I would like to know is if tradesman would have a need for this! Think bespoke cupboards developing units, kitchens, wardrobes bathroom cabinets all designed by you and your customer brought to life by us ready for you to put together on site, which will go together perfectly!
Pricing is very straight forward, although I’m undecided on what to charge at the moment as I can’t have it compromise our commercial entity.
All using cabinet vision!
Would love to know your thoughts

There is apparently a company based. In Ireland that does the same thing.
Also most panel suppliers have a cut and edge service. Might be more viable to go into kitchen unit manufacturing. SOTK. Do very well. As do the other suppliers. You have the cnc machines. I couldn’t charge enough to cover the cost. Along with my cost. But I could on a kitchen.
Good luck though mate.

To be fair I probably didn’t explain my idea well enough.
I am going to create a video next week and show what I mean.

You’ve lost me. So what is the expected cost. Of say a white 3 door wardrobe. 1400 wide. 2.1 high. Split in 3. With a smaller door on top. So 3 lower doors at 1800. 3 upper at 300. Say doors in. egger F447 ST2. Which is a flat grey metallic colour. The m just making the very same item now.
Re: Cabinet design and cutting service idea
I sometimes get boards cut by my supplier on their wall saw but to be honest they aren't as accurate as I would like.
I did approach a local kitchen cabinet manufacture to see if they would cut panels to my cutting list and edge band them but they never bothered getting back to me.
So yes, I would be interested in a service like this depending on costs.

Are you thinking of flat pack or assembled. I'd be interested but imagine cost of transport would make it prohibitive.

Re: Cabinet design and cutting service idea
Would all be flatpack!
The beauty of this service is I don’t need a cutting list I just need a sketch of the cabinet. I will then give you a cost to produce the components.
The unit or units will then go together perfectly as a flat pack unit!
Our accuracy on the CNC’s are micron perfect.
I am defo going to create a video for you guys tomorrow to show you how it would be done.

Re: Cabinet design and cutting service idea
Hello
Please have a look at this link, I’ve narrated it too, please don’t be too harsh on me as I’m not David Attenborough
6 sheets would cost about 250 quid to cut plus cost of materials.
Edging would be about 120 quid
Although I’ve not worked out where it’s going to be yet in terms of price point - I tend to charge 65 quid per sheet and get this all day long commercially - but I know this could price me out the tradesmans market! As we are all very guilty of under valuing our services.
But all these units will go together perfectly

Re: Cabinet design and cutting service idea
Mark,
Really really powerful stuff that, I would say you are bang on the money if not a little too cheap, I would more than happily pay that amount.
My last cut and edge job I subbed out was; 10 sheets of Egger Cashmere grey, 2 sheets oak mdf, 4 sheets MR MDF and 76m of a mix of 1 and 2mm Edging including delivery and VAT £1567. That, however was just straight off a beam saw, so obviously no drillings/rebates etc of any sort, so I had to do that on top.
I'm sure you are well aware, but I can see a lot of 'admin' time being sucked in to offering this service, and I can't imagine you have much down time with the work you do, but if you can make it work (pretty obvious to me you could!), I am coinfident you'd easily pick up trade customers who would take responsibilty for the sizing etc I for one woud jump at it, even if I had to drive to Birmingham from South East London to collect it.
You've made that massive investment in the software seat, the learning curve and the machinery do everything you can to make it pay!

That is a good video Mark. I think it would be an advantage to show the finished article too. Maybe a few example of your own work from inception to finish. Also example prices. I know it's your line of work but have you contacted shoplifting companies, hotel chains, just like you they do a lot of display cabinets and counter work which would be right up your street.mark270981 wrote:Hello

Although 'shoplifting' companies tend not to advertise much; Lol.

Good for you Mark and you have made the outlay. Most small companies can't cope with the investment cost of machinery and software but you are already there.mark270981 wrote:Cheers for the feedback

You definitely have the brains to make this work Mark.
