What type of plywood is this??

Post by kazazza » Sun Sep 27, 2020 11:57 am

Hi everyone, a while back I was given some really nice plywood, and since then I've been trying to find some more.

The plywood I'm after is the lighter shade you see here. The closest match I have been able to find is a S/BB birch ply, which is the darker shade you see here.

Does anyone know the name of this really light coloured ply? Or has anyone ever seen it before? All my local timber yards haven't seen it before and I have no contact details for the person who gave me the original stuff :(

Thanks!

Thanks thekarter, can you be any more specific? I've already tried buying an S/BB grade birch ply, but as you can see thats not at all the same stuff as my original :(

I reckon traditional birch is on the left. The right hand one might be birch with a lighter coloured glue given an impression of being lighter over all.

Is the lighter ply softer and lighter in weight than the birch?

They both feel the same in weight. I think Bob is right with the colour of the glue, but im having no luck finding anything mentioning glue colour of birch ply.

Traditionally birch ply was made in the baltic region, Russia, Latvia maybe Scandanavia too and the glue is a dark reddish brown but these days ply is being also made in china and they could easily be using a different adhesive which might explain what you are seeing.
I don't know how to specify one type over another other than eyeballing it at the timber merchant and buying stock when you see what you like.
We used to have a really good plywood specialist near me John Lucey ltd but it has closed down due to retirement of the owner - he might have known.

I think the lighter glue is a Melamine glue for internal use and I believe is used for laser cutting so try asking for Laser ply.
