Making glazed doors

Postby promhandicam » Wed Jun 16, 2010 10:01 pm

For my next job I have to make some glazed doors for a display cabinet. I was planning on using this wealden combination cutter which produces a roman ogee profile, and then doing as Paul suggested in a recent thread:
. . .for the glazed doors I glue them up without any panel, when the glue is set use one of the cutters and a bearing to machine off the the back inside of the stile to form a rebate, square up the corners and then bead the glass in. A bit of silicone around the glass will give it extra strength.

If I go for the maximum thickness rail / stile of 23mm, then I will have about a 6mm rebate behind the glass to pin on a glazing bead. Is this sufficient? If so would you use just an ordinary bead like this:

or something a bit more substantial like this:

Thanks in advance,

You havent got a great deal of room for a bead when you use those cutters. I usually just bead in a rectangular section that fills the rebate and sits flush with the back of the door a touch of slilicone on the glass and the bead pinned in with the headless pinner.

cheers

Thanks Jonny. I'll have to have a play around with the cutters and see if I can maybe get away with a slightly thicker section to get a bigger rebate on the back.
