Ryobi dovetail jig - Cutter size?

Postby Irma Peterson » Fri Jan 12, 2018 7:20 pm

Hi,

I have just been given a Ryobi dovetail jig DT330, but no instructions, bush or cutter for it. I have bought a Trend GB12 bush that fits my Elu Mof96, but cannot identify what cutter would be suitable.

The spacing of the fingers (pitch) of the template is 25mm as far as I can tell (not 1").

I believe this jig was also marketed by Towa.

Does anyone have this jig and can point me at a suitable cutter (¼" shank)?

And does anyone have the instructions they can let me have a scan of?

Thanks in advance.

If it’s the one I’m thinking of it was a generic jig found under a few brand names, take a look at this link & see if the image is the same as yours.

Hi Doug, thanks for the reply.

It's sort of similar, but there are a few subtle differences, the most important (I think) is that it is imperial, whereas my measurement of the fingers on this one suggests it's metric (I measured over a number of fingers, and it seems to stick to 25mm spacing). Whether that matters or not is another question.

However, the manual for the Woodstock specifies a ¼" shank, ½" width and 14° angle cutter. I have a Nutool router set (yes I know it's probably crap) that has a bit like this (although I'm not 100% sure of the angle), but it appears too small, I can't set it to make a pin/tail that works (pins come out too large).

Currently I'm leaning toward a Trend cutter that is recommended for the Titan jig, but still open to advice/suggestions.

I'm see if I can post a picture shortly...

Thanks again,

My own Bosch jig takes a 14mm wide cutter, that said the height of the cutter makes a big difference in the fit of the joint, might be worth experimenting with a few different height settings if you haven’t already.

Hi Doug,

I've bitten the bullet and ordered a Trend cutter that is 15.9mm wide, I'll let you know how I get on...

Well, the Trend GB12 bush and the Trend C160A cutter seem to do the job, I've not actually used it in anger, but I've cut some dovetails in some scrape ply that suggest it all does what is needed.
I did machine a little off the bush, but now think I didn't need too :o)
Note, the C160A is 15.9mm wide, still can't see how a 12.7mm wide cutter could possibly work...

Thanks for all the responses.
