Oak Arched Doors

Postby siafins » Sun Dec 18, 2016 2:42 pm

Some images of a Pair of Arched Doors that was made lately to replace original doors/frame and to match a Kitchen we made a few years before. The originals weren't a proper curve so had to try and get the architrave to cover the original opening best we could.

All made in house, more of a kitchen man so the curved doors were a first for me, we do a lot of curved kitchens though.

Laminated frame/lining with solid oak veneers and 2 layers of kerfed birch plywood. Everything else solid Oak.

Very nice, is the laminating done in a bag press or former and clamps ?

About time i put some work up for scrutiny really.

Thank you Jonr.

Laminated the door frame around a former and used 2 large ratchet straps around it and built up the thickness. Nothing fancy, just a router/trammel and a spindle moulder/ring fence.

If you're on Instagram, there's some WIP shots of the work there, for some reason one or two wouldnt load up here.

I like the architrave (not too fussy) it all goes really well. All of the woodwork looks to have a very nice smooth finish and you have matched the joints in the architrave nicely with the joints in the doors. It all looks top notch.

I see you have two sections of oak forming the arch on each of the doors. Do you mind sharing how you jointed the sections?

Thanks Mark.

I managed to pick up an unsold Trend Beadlock system in my local tool shop and used it in the middle sections of the arch. Managed to position 2 of 12.5mm thick x 150mm long beadlocks within each joint without it showing after machining on the spindle. Worked a treat.

Where the arched section joins the hinge stile I used a large tenon and pegged it. Managed to hide most of it in the rebate.

Thank you for sharing how you made the arched door joint, I quite like how you have hidden the tenon on the outer and inner sections . Smart bit of thinking there.

Cheers Mark

Alright - SO I've looked at this about 20 times and I'm still not completely clear on how all of this is done ! Im not going to attempt any curved work this complicated at any point soon but would really like to know more about how its done. Id love to make a curved door (gothic style)

Frame
Laminated plywood with veneer on top - Go this bit I think
- Dont understand what your doing with the router - are you just squaring the edge using the flat arch jig as a reference ?
- How thick is the veneer and do you mill this yourself ?

Door Stop
- Are you laminating together using the frame made as per above as the jig ?

Door Stile
- I assume this is solid timber, which has been radiused using your MDF template as a guide and tenoned together,

Glazing bead
- Have you laminated bits together using the door stile as a former - then routered out the glazing detail........wouldnt like to try a piece of wood that small on the spindle .

Sorry for all the questions, but your work is very impressive and I am very keen to know more !
