Extending a lathe bed

Post by jfc » Mon Jan 06, 2020 6:23 pm

My record lathe has two 1-1/4 stainless bars that hold it together and support the head and tail stocks . I need to extend them buy about 100mm . Any bright ideas ?

If they are hollow, could you just turn a couple of extenders out of hardwood so they slide inside the stainless steel ones and fix to the tailstock? or have something similar made out of steel.

The bed on one of my lathes is flat with a slot in the middle and I needed to extend it to turn some table legs, I simply G clamped a couple of bits of angle iron to the bed to extend it and fixed the tail stock to them, it worked quite well. I turned the table legs with no problem. Since then I have purchased a lathe with a longer bed.

If they are solid do it the other way round and get hold of a couple of lengths of tube with a 1 1/4" bore, cut the existing bars and slide the tubes over the ends. Ideally an engineering company would be able to tap a threaded hole or two at each end so that you can secure the tubes to the bars with a couple of grub screws or threaded knobs. This tube should work : https://www.metals4u.co.uk/mild-steel/c ... swg)/p7408

I have a similar Record lathe to yours, slightly older maybe as mine has chromed solid bars. As a temporary solution a couple of scaffolding poles might do. Slightly larger diameter at 48mm but everything should still clamp up.
Just a thought.

The bars where hollow . Once i loosened them off the whole thing came apart so i took a bar to my local metal place and the bloke grunted 33.7 then wondered off out the back and came back with two 1.6m long bars . £20 .
