Re: Past project
You're not bothering to actually look and read what I've written.
If you look more closely you will see that I am doing exactly what is supposed to be done.

Follow what oldboy22 is trying to help you with, or if you know better just get on with it. I'd take his advice if I were you Rodger, he seems to be very capable.

If I were you I would make new templates to include the straight bit either end( you’ll make a mistake if you don’t). Sharpen your tools and get stuck in it shouldn’t take more than 3-4 hours to cut and cleanup, then we can move on. All that can be said has been said multiple times it’s up to you now.

If you drill a hole in the template a few inches from the end you can check that the template is exactly following the tangents, you can see through the hole they are in line.thatsnotafestool wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 2:39 pm Revisiting (between buttock-clenching) everything before committing.
So in your instructions above...which I'm following..all makes sense until here......
6 draw around your template again in the new positions, making sure your tangent lines on the template are shifted to the new position on the blank drawn in 5. A hole a few inches from the end of your template will help make sure they are straight , the template drawn around in the new position should line up with the sections drawn on the end.
Perhaps it's my wrong interpretation of what you've written but looking at your photo below that post, the template doesn't line up with the sections drawn on the end. It's shifted over to the right a little.
Also in your list, I can't see any 'How To' to handle the template on the 'underneath' face.
It’s shifted over (hangs over) a bit but lines up with inclined side about 15mm or so down from the top! to the template on the bottom, surely you can see that, as near as makes no difference. Yours will hang over more because it’s a bigger twist.
The template on the underside is dealt with exactly as the template on the top, but shifts the other way so it still lines up with the other side.

Re: Past project
I probably caught that with the bandsaw or something, I can’t remember plus it’s been slid down from the end a bit that is probably a bit of it. Your just finding problems for the sake of it now.
I’m sure you smarter than this.

Why are you being so snarky and defensive? You came here to help, you said. I'm asking legitimate questions to check that I am doing the right thing and for clarification and then you start being snide FFS. You're behaving like a two-year old. Grow up.

Picture two .
The section on the end doesn’t look square, ie the top looks wider than the underside. Or is it an illusion?

Your still not following my list, you didn’t make and add to the templates.
I think you should make another softwood piece ,but follow the list to the letter, you need the practice and this time square it properly. We shouldn’t be going over and over the same thing it’s getting very hard work.

We have been doing this for weeks now and you are still asking is this right is that right, you should know it’s right by now and just do it.
I’m sorry to say I don’t think your up to this job, I think you should come up with another plan.
I don’t want to demoralise or upset you but that’s what I think, your not really any further forward than before. Don’t be upset by what I’m saying this is a very hard branch of the trade, at least you can say I gave it a try. There are plenty who wouldn’t have got this far.

Re: Past project
OK enough. If you don't know the answer then say so. You're so full of putting out petty, niggling little digs and then when clarification is asked for you throw a hissy fit. You give inaccurate information and then when queried say 'Oh..the bandsaw might have slipped' and then try and deflect from the fact that you've written b*ll*cks. It's called trolling.
It's fortunate that this forum has the Friends and Foe option and I am delighted to say that I'm sticking you on my Foe list.
That means that I never see your replies again.
Good bye.

It’s been suggested that possibly I didn’t explain myself properly regarding making the templates
so here is a completed template drawing, I will not be answering any questions from certain members of the forum, because I’ve been told everything I say is B%@l+*&k.

Looks like the Asian Method, European way!
Worth noting how he picks up the reference points on site, which is important.

Re: Past project
If you can read an original copy online you should find they are much better than the re-printed versions you buy now.
I know everyone says how good Riddle was in his day but I don't find Riddle's works are that helpful unless you already have a good understanding of the basics of Tangent Hand-railing. Personally I think Morris Williams Book is a good book to start with. It's down to personal choice I suppose.
Re: Past project
I’m just flicking through looking for different techniques and any tips I might find useful. I can already draw every staircase plan layout and staircase combination I’m ever going to come up against, it’s only fun for me now I won’t be making anymore I don’t think.Meccarroll wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 9:40 am

Re: Past project
Absolutely fantastic video. Thanks for sharing. Almost 4000 views in only one day. There are obviously still some people out there that want to see quality traditional wood work. Clearly demonstrates how much skill and commitment is required to complete a wreath to perfection. Attempting this without having completed multiple practice pieces is nuts.Oldboy22 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 21, 2021 6:47 am

Okay everyone there seems to be a lot of interest in this post going by the number of views, why doesn’t anyone post a comment or question? This is your opportunity to get involved please don’t be shy or worry you might ask something silly. The forum is nothing if people don’t get involved.

Re: Past project
I was hoping for a little more input from the forum but to no avail.
I wanted to prove my drawing but can’t see it has been so far, I’ve documented it but admit I’ve forgotten to take some photos, I hope someone finds this interesting, like I’ve said before I’m not an expert but this is how I did it.
1 I transferred from cad to paper as I don’t have a printer.
2 templates made and layer on blank
3 joints cut square and 90deg to tangents.( don’t tweak these later , it should be right)

Re: Past project
4 cut around template and reduce to correct thickness as developed in the cad drawing if not already done.
5 apply bevels to both ends and draw tangents and shifted tangents to the top and underside. Forgot to take a picture showing bevels.

Re: Past project
6 viewing hole in template shows how shifted tangents are used to line up templates .
Re: Past project
Checking drawing is correct over the plan radius, I couldn’t find my roofing square so was holding with one hand while trying to take picture with the other. But it was correct , happy days.
Re: Past project
Sorry forgot to take pictures of me working the top and underside but once the sides are done it’s easier to draw the waste on the sides, and then slowly removed on the bandsaw.
Re: Past project
None of what I said was b%*l+-&ks.
