Vertical sliding sash shutters-help please!

Post by Orangedog »

Hello experts, I’m hoping someone will be able to help. I’ve got a Victorian house with bay windows. The original timber sash windows have sadly been replaced with upvc. Inside however, there are hinged boxes below the sills and inside the reveals (is that the right word?!) there are grooves and pulley wheels. I think these must have been for vertical sliding shutters. Unfortunately the panels aren’t in the boxes. What are these type of shutters called and who would be the right sort of people to contact to replace them? General joiner? Sash window repair person?? I really don’t know where to start! Thank you :)

If I were you I would probably take some photos and print them out then take them down to a local Joiner (the type of person with woodwork machinery in a unit and advertises to make joinery items). Ask them for initial advice and take it from there.

In common with many others who ask for help with this sort of task you have given a very adequate description of the vertical shutters concerned, but completely failed to say where the windows are !
There may be just the assistance you need just a few miles away, but without information from you, no one will bother to post on the off chance that you are local.

Hi
I have these shutters retained in some of our Victorian windows - it remains on the todo list to renovate them, so they just stay out of sight. I recall a few threads on UK Workshoo and a reference to a textbook drawing etc - I will try to find these.

There may be others, but these might be of interest.

"In his house" - very droll, but I do know of someone who might be interested, but without a location why would anyone with this increasingly rare skill bother to respond? I wasn't taking a rise, just pointing out the problem.
