Vac-Vac preservative treatment?

Customer has request this for some windows made with redwood pine. What the hell is it?

Does all the timber get this treatment before manufacture? Or once everything is made? Someone shed some light on this new fangled nonsense, and recommend me someone to get in touch with.

It's just the method of introducing the green sh*t (technically speaking) that all? treated timber gets impregnated with. Pressure treated in a great big tubey thing to force it into the wood.

its not new been around for years.my local place has a round tank that can take
anything upto 7mts long but only 1.2 mts high.so anything 1.2 or under door window frame etc they will
treat it complete anything over will go in bits.
one word of warning it will stink your van and your workshop out for ages.

I get my stuff done at PTG treatments in Tilbury they have plants dotted around the country, PV2 Vac Vac its a water based treatment now hardly any smell and its given an orangey yellow stain just to prove that its been done as the treatment itself is clear, as said already over 1.2 like window frames will have to be left in component parts anything under is ok, they check moisture content before and after treatment and that info goes on the ticket for reference.

but seriously .. they put it in an autoclave (a sealed cylindar - like a big torpedo tube ) .. with the preservative and make a vacuum, so the wood takes it in deeper than it would otherwise

The whole thing sounds like the biggest faff in the world to be honest but hey ho. Surely the cost difference could warrant dougy fir or even hardwood.

some architects spec it, i try an put them on to hardwood instead. alot of painters moan about paint peel in a few years as the paint doesnt like it. so iv seen an been told.

I've heard it's no good on redwood as it doesn't penetrate the heartwood. It really does stink and a good redwood takes paint really well. I once worked for a builders merchant who used to get his staff to paint untreated sawn pine and redwood with the same preservative and sell it as VAC VAC. A very unscrupulous operation of which I'm convinced still goes on today.
If you're making windows,unsorted redwood will be fine as long as it's painted properly and on a regular basis.

Vac Vac is a low pressure preservative specifically for timber used inside or protected by a coating. It is different to the other type of preservative treatment (high pressure) which is green and the wood can be used outside or in the ground. Vac treatments used to be based on white spirit and did smell of solvent. Now we use waterbased treatments which are compatible with waterbased coatings. The process takes a couple of days to complete and will provide upto 30 years protection. Yes painted joinery will last if the coating is maintained but the treatment is an insurance if water does get in to the wood as it inevitably will, especially at the joints.
