Identify the wood.

I know that lots of older tools had Rosewood parts - but I have come into ownership of a marker /scribe tool which it predominantly BLACK wood - I mean really black - even where ther is a chip off it the inside is jet black and it's very heavy. It also has two different marking stalks - one with a pair of adjustable points and the other is like a small rounder blade.

Anyone have any idea of the wood used - can only think of ebony or lignum vitae being that black and heavy.

It's ebony or African blackwood (which used to be classed as ebony anyway).

I must admit I thought it was probably ebony- although it is heavy I have an idea that lignum vitae is really heavy. Bought a job lot of tools - mainly because I wanted a good old drawknife but didn't want to pay silly money. Got a load of absolutely fabulous old chisels with it plus a combination plane and 3 wooden moulding planes .... didn't even notice this on the picture but I love it!!!!
