One for the Australian timber afishionadoes amongst the members

This bowl is made from forrest fire damaged Australian burr, probably Red Mallee.

The first photo shows the chard outer offcut & if you look at the top of the bandsawn section you can see how the scorching has gone into the timber.



This is the bowl fresh off the lathe.




& these 2 of it after it had been oiled.





It`s already been pointed out that it wont hold much milk with my cornflakes but c&c still welcome.......I think

I think it would be difficult to wear this one as a hat, too shallow and flat.

I like it too. So much more interesting than a 'normal' wood.

I'm going to have to unbury my lathe some time and have a go.

I think that if the rim had a crisper edge I would like it more and it would look lee like it had been dug up in a field

*this opinion comes with the caveat that I know nothing about these things, and I'm sure technically it's an impressive piece, also, enough other people have said that they like it that my opinion won't hurt your feelings. x.*

Not scary, but to get a good finish it was spinning pretty quick, this helped the gouge pass over the voids but meant the bits coming off it hit you like bullets
It remarkably ridge though if i`d have gone thiner it would probably have started to break up

Can`t remember probably, I`ve had the blanks a few years now.

If I`m honest it`s not the most pleasing piece I`ve ever turned sTu, but it`s my entry for this years competition & the problem is coming up with something different to what everyone else will turn.

It will be judged on several aspects which include technical difficulty amongst other things, so turning a bowl out of a normal bit of timber wont get many marks on that score.
As to the just dug up look I`m hoping that will give me the edge, shabby chic & all that 5hite

I was thinking of suggesting your colander idea to the good lady, but I doubt she`d want to put her wet lettuce in it & to be honest I`m not that brave

I love it, not your run of the mills. I think you should name it "The Marmite piece" as you love it or hate it. Looking forward to start making bowls, but i lack skill, good chisels and a chuck, but apart from the, i'm all set
